The Green Mile

{5/5} “What happens on the Mile stays on the Mile.”

The Green Mile, released in 1999

In 1935 Paul was a prison guard working on death row where prisoners were electrocuted. The chair is nicknamed “Old Sparky” and they have killed some men who did very bad things. When John Coffey, an enormous black man wrongfully convicted, comes to his prison Paul is astonished to find that John has a magical ability to heal people. Despite John’s wrongful conviction, he’s willing to help others.

It’s about people who regret the bad things they’ve done in the past, and people who don’t.

I like how the guards treat the prisoner who is about to be killed extra kindly.

It’s a masterpiece among masterpieces.

Based on the novel by Stephen King (11.22.63).

Michael Clarke Duncan is astonishing as John Coffey.

Dabbs Greer has a nice part as Old Paul.

Graham Greene and Sam Rockwell play prisoners, Gary Sinise plays a lawyer, and William Sadler plays the father of the girls who were killed.

Stars Tom Hanks, Bonnie Hunt, David Morse, and James Cromwell. Directed by Frank Darabont (The Majestic). The mysterious music is by Thomas Newman.

This is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve seen it.
