What We Left Behind
{5/5} “The way you know we liked you was that you kept coming back, and your role kept getting better. That is how writers tell an actor that they like them more than anything.” — Ira Steven Behr, to Marc Alaimo
What We Left Behind, released in 2018
When Star Trek: Deep Space Nine came out in 1993 it was thought of by many as the odd middle child because it didn’t fit the Star Trek formula. But it was eventually allowed to do things that the others couldn’t do, like serialized storytelling. Women have grown up with strong female characters like Kira and Dax. The show affected many people in a positive way.
This is a documentary about Deep Space Nine, filmed many years after the show’s conclusion.
Main and recurring actors and many behind-the-scenes people are interviewed.
Not only that, but the actual DS9 writers come up with a new episode — for a mythical season 8. Everything in this show is great, but watching the writers come up with a new episode — that is thrilling. The episode does end on a cliffhanger which is never resolved.
It’s beautiful, and all DS9 fans will want to watch it.
Directed by Ira Steven Behr (showrunner on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and David Zappone (producer on For the Love of Spock).
