A Man Called Otto

{5/5} “‘Do you think I’m going to cut myself and bleed all over the floor and sue you?’ ‘No.’ ‘Then I don’t need your help.'”

A Man Called Otto, released in 2023

Otto is getting a bit grumpy in his old age. He’s annoyed with junk mail, people not recycling properly, and dogs peeing on his lawn. He’s retiring but he’s not exactly happy about it — his company moved him into a different role and gave him a supervisor who knows less than he does. His wife has died, and he thinks his life is over. But then a new couple moves in across the street.

This movie is based on a Swedish one.

There are some very serious scenes, but also lots of amusing parts.

Otto’s first meeting with Sonya, his future wife, is beautiful — he gets on a train to give her back the book that she dropped.

It’s about love, grief, and friendship.

Tom Hanks is astonishing.

Young Otto is played by Truman Hanks, Tom’s son.

Stars Mariana TreviƱo, Rachel Keller, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Directed by Marc Forster (Stranger Than Fiction). The delightful music is by Thomas Newman.
