KW Symphony’s “Elegance and Innovation”

I attended the KW Symphony’s concert “Elegance and Innovation.” Here’s the program:

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — Symphony No 31 “Paris”
  • Riho Esko Maimets — Ecdysis: Double Concerto for Piccolo, Harp, and Orchestra
  • Ricard Strauss — Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme

The orchestra was conducted by Alexander Shelley, the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s music director. He conducted the Mozart and Strauss without a score. He also introduced the concert with some fun context for the pieces.

The Maimets piece was brand new. Unlike the other beautiful pieces, this was more of an interesting experience — think Goldsmith’s “Planet of the Apes” and you’ll be in the right neighbourhood.

The piccolo soloist was Kali Maimets and the harp soloist was Lori Gemmell.

I didn’t know any of these pieces, but I knew the Mozart would be full of Mozartian goodness. He wrote this symphony when he was 22 years old.

The audience wasn’t full, but it was appreciative of the performance.
