The Whale

{5/5} “Who would want me to be a part of their life?”

The Whale, released in 2022

Charlie is an English teacher — he teaches online, with his camera off. Charlie is very obese. His friend Liz is a nurse — she says he has congestive heart failure and he needs to go to the hospital. But he doesn’t have insurance. When his daughter Ellie stops by he hopes that he can at least help her with something he’s good at — some English essays.

It’s pretty serious, more serious than I usually watch. But it is, of course, very well done.

It’s about people who made mistakes, people who are angry, and people who are dying.

I have some hope that this will create more empathy for people who are obese.

Stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, and Samantha Morton. Directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain). The music is by Rob Simonsen.
