The Abyss

{5/5} “Raise your hand if you think that was a Russian water tentacle.”

The Abyss, released in 1989

When the US navy loses a submarine, they ask the team on a deep sea oil rig to help them out. They want to search for survivors, and are sending down a team of navy seals to do it. Bud, the man in charge of the oil drillers, is dismayed to find that his estranged wife, Lindsey, is accompanying them. A hurricane is coming, and they want to get this mission done before then.

The movie has a great look to it — the underwater scenes look like they were filmed underwater, because they were.

I like how Bud throws his wedding ring in the toilet, but a few seconds later comes back and fishes it out.

It’s about what happens when someone in your group has a different mission than you. It’s also about an international incident that starts because of a mistake. And it’s about first contact.

Stars Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn. Directed by James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water). The majestic music is by Alan Silvestri — some parts are reminiscent of Back to the Future.

This is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve seen it.
