The Prestige

{5/5} “He’s a natural magician. Course you can’t trust him.”

The Prestige, released in 2006

Borden and Angier are rival magicians. Angier’s wife Julia was killed when she couldn’t escape from a water tank fast enough. Angier blames Borden because he’s the one who tied the knot around Julia’s hands. When Borden does a bullet catch Angier, in disguise, shoots off the tops of two of his fingers. Angier acquires an apparatus from Tesla to use in one of his illusions — but it’s not a trick, it’s real.

Even if you know what happens, you have to pay close attention — the story skips from past to present a lot.

It’s about doing whatever it takes to be the best.

Ricky Jay, Andy Serkis, and Daniel Davis have small roles.

Stars Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, David Bowie, and Rebecca Hall. Directed by Christopher Nolan (Tenet). The atmospheric music is by David Julyan.

This is the 3rd time I’ve seen it. My previous review is here.
