Mystery Men

{4/5} “‘If one person vomits in my pool, I’m going to divorce you.’ ‘That’s fair.'”

Mystery Men, released in 1999

The Shoveler, the Blue Raja, and Mr. Furious are superheroes, sort of. They try to be helpful, but they’re really not very good at it. Captain Amazing, on the other hand, is a professional. But when Casanova Frankenstein kidnaps Captain Amazing, the other superheroes need to step up their game. They even have try outs for other people to join their team.

I like the premise of this movie, but it’s a bit less funny than it should be.

There’s one moment that doesn’t make sense, because of scenes that were cut out. Casanova has kidnapped the woman Roy likes, but there’s no way he would know who she is.

Greg Kinnear is suitably arrogant, and Geoffrey Rush is suitably dastardly.

Stars Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Janeane Garofalo, and Paul Reubens. Directed by Kinka Usher (his only movie). The music by Stephen Warbeck has moments of brilliance, like when the team fights Casanova at his car.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time I’ve seen it.
