Scavengers Reign

{4.5/5} “He messed up. But I’m guessing you dug your heels in when he mentioned the idea instead of, you know, talking to him like a human and getting him to change his mind.”

Scavengers Reign, aired in 2023

The crew of the Demeter have landed in escape pods on an unknown planet. A bunch of people didn’t survive but there are 3 groups left. They have brought the ship down to the planet, and now they’re trying to get there. Azi has her robot Levi with her, but she has been acting strange lately. Sam and Ursula are together. And Kamen is by himself at first, but then makes a bargain with a local creature.

This 12-episode mini-series is astonishingly unique — there’s no other show like it.

The world has been crafted with great care. It’s a very squishy world, and the creators have imagined how all the creatures would interact as well as how they would interact with humans.

There are a bunch of flashbacks to life aboard the ship.

It’s about the dangers of exploration, and paying close attention to your environment in order to get what you want.

The conclusion is mostly satisfying, as it fits the tone of the show. I’m glad the filmmakers were able to bring their vision to life.

My favourite character is Azi who does what needs to be done, has a sense of humour, and has compassion for a robot.

The ethereal music is by Nicolas Snyder.

Stars the voices of Alia Shawkat, Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, and Bob Stephenson.

The creators created a short to show off what they wanted to do, and a mini-series was greenlit based on that.

Created by Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner (the Scavengers short).
