Sun of Suns

{4.5/5} “The shells of cloud that enveloped the center of Virga sometimes parted, revealing the sun of suns, Candesce. Daylight would suddenly flash out to fill the entire volume of winter. Each time, Hayden had stood on the air, amazed at the brilliance of it — at the sheer size of an ancient, untended fusion engine that put all the other suns in Virga to shame.”

Sun of Suns by Karl Schroeder, published in 2006

The city of Aerie existed in the shadow of Slipstream. Hayden’s mother had built a new sun, and was preparing to turn it on — then Aerie, and its neighbours, would be free. But Slipstream had found out about the secret project, and now they were here with their warships. When the new sun comes on in the midst of battle, Hayden knows that his mother is dead.

This the 1st book in Schroeder’s 5-book Virga series.

Read this when you have focus — the geography of the world is wildly unusual. Schroeder has created a unique world — a balloon thousands of kilometres wide, in which various cities create gravity for themselves by spinning things.

It’s about what happens when you are amongst your enemy for a long period of time. It’s about pursuing an ancient treasure. And it’s about what happens when it turns out that someone you know comes from another world.

The story will grab you, and you’ll want to read the sequel.

I’ve read 8 of Schroeder’s books. I previously reviewed Stealing Worlds.
