The Secret World of Arietty

{4/5} “You forgot something.”

The Secret World of Arietty, released in 2010

Arietty is 14 and goes with her father on her first borrowing expedition. They go into the area of the house where the humans live. The humans are giants compared to them. They grab a sugar cube in the kitchen, but then drop it. Sho, a human boy, sees Arietty but her parents warn her she can’t go near him.

This is a Japanese animated movie. Since it’s a Studio Ghibli movie, it’s visually splendid.

I like the character of Arietty, who’s brave and curious. One of the best things in the movie is the way the borrowers use small things from the human world.

There are a few things that don’t make sense but it has a nice theme of friendship.

Stars the voices of Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, and Olivia Colman (in the UK dubbed version).

Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Mary and the Witch’s Flower). The gentle music is by Cécile Corbel.
