Rift in the Sky

{4.5/5} “This ability we have will save more lives than it risks. Let the Oud reshape the ground. Sona will ‘port to safety. Let our crops fail. We’ll ‘port to another Clan and trade for food. This is the most important Talent ever discovered by Om’ray and we must never fear to use it.”

Rift in the Sky by Julie E. Czerneda, published in 2009

Sona was wiped out 83 years ago by the Oud. Now it’s coming back to life, with people planting plants and having babies. Aryl and Enris visit their human friend Marcus, who shows them some Om’ray technology. Enris recognizes the clear wafers from his time at Vyna. He informs them that Sona’s old Adepts are on the discs, waiting to be born again.

This is the sequel to Riders of the Storm and completes the the Stratification trilogy. The next book in the overarching series continues the story of Sira, Ary’s great-granddaughter.

It’s about looking after your clan, and unexpected consequences when your people gain a new ability.

Czerneda often writes about friends who would do anything for each other, as she does here.

I’ve read 16 books by Czerneda.
