ST: A Year To The Day That I Saw Myself Die

{4/5} “Without a unifying philosophy, our civilization was trapped in an endless cycle of struggle. Our conflict perpetuated itself for its own sake, just as a flame seeks fuel to sustain its burning. For the survival of our species, Sokor, we must break the cycle — or be consumed by it.” (from “Sundering” by David Mack)

Star Trek: “A Year To The Day That I Saw Myself Die” And Other Stories by Walter Koenig et al, published in 2024

At the time when the people who will be known as Romulans are being expelled from Vulcan, one man says goodbye to his twin brother. When Kirk is on vacation he runs into Cyrano Jones — but is surprised to find that he seems to have turned over a new leaf. When Scotty and Uhura are captured by pirates they demand that Scotty fix their engine — but it’s so badly put together that it’s about to explode. Two thousand years in the future Odo wrestles with the meaning of existence, and he conjures up visions of his long-dead friends to help him.

Most of the stories are great or even brilliant but there are also several not-so-great stories, including the one by the author most prominently mentioned on the cover. I was disappointed with the overall quality versus the previous entries in this series.

All of the authors are able to convey their knowledge of the characters and situations they’re writing about.

The title story is, of course, about Miles O’Brien.

For the first time in an anthology, there are stories from Discovery and Picard.

Authors include Greg Cox, Una McCormack, and Keith R. A. DeCandido.
