The Great Wall

{4/5} “A man must learn to trust before he can be trusted.”

The Great Wall, released in 2019

William and Tovar are in China, looking for the black powder that they have heard of but not seen. They are attacked by a creature — William cuts off its arm with his sword and it falls into a chasm. He doesn’t know what the creature is, though. When they reach the Great Wall, they are captured but kept alive because of their story about the creature. It turns out that the Great Wall was built to keep out the creatures, the Tao Tei.

This movie is visually stunning — the scenery and costumes are breathtaking.

It’s about people who live for themselves and people who want to be part of something greater. It’s about using trial and error to figure out how to defeat your enemy.

Stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, and Tian Jing. Directed by Yimou Zhang (Hero).
