My Dead Friend Zoe
{5/5} “Never too late to be surprised.”
My Dead Friend Zoe, released in 2024
Merit is back from the war. She still talks to her friend Zoe who she fought with in Afghanistan, but Zoe is dead. She has been ordered to attend group counselling but finds it hard to focus. She finds out that her grandfather is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Of course, he thinks he’s fine. Merit doesn’t want to tell the people in her group about Zoe.
It’s about the enormously difficult feelings you have when you’re home from war, realizing that you can share your pain, and forgiving yourself.
It’s pretty serious, but very well done.
Stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman. Directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes (the TV show Meals Ready to Eat).
