Obscura

{5/5} “‘Whoever’s doing this doesn’t want us here, doesn’t want us finding out what’s wrong with shifting. That’s why they killed Tinsel. He had the authority to shut this all down.’ ‘Because whoever it is knows the truth.'”

Obscura by Joe Hart, published in 2018

Gillian’s husband Kent died of a new disease, Losian’s, that initially affected his memory. She’s now running a trial on rates to try to figure out which neurons are damaged in Losian’s. She’s lost her funding but will keep going for the next month in case a breakthrough is made. Her daughter Carrie has the disease too, so everything is riding on a treatment. Her old friend Carson, who works at NASA, comes by with a proposal she doesn’t want to take but can’t ignore.

It will grab you right away — why is the mother of a sick kid going into space?

It’s a thriller wrapped in a science fiction wrapper. It’s a medical mystery, and a murder mystery in space with only one suspect.

It’s about being lied to about something incredibly important, and what you would be willing to do if you were addicted.

This is the 1st book I’ve read by Hart. I may read some of his others even if they’re not science fiction — he’s a terrific writer.
