Foe

{5/5} “Do you want to live mundane lives like everyone else, or do you want to be part of something special and unique?”

Foe, released in 2023

Hen and Junior live on a farm that’s been in Junior’s family for generations, but they don’t do any farming. One night a man named Terrance comes by to talk to them about the possibility of going into space. They are skeptical, and then Terrance reveals that he only wants Junior, because of his strength. Terrance wants him to go up to the space station, and he’s somewhat threatening about it.

It’s about a couple who’s trying to navigate one of them leaving for an extended period of time, against their will. It’s about how feelings can be confusing.

It’s a bit more devastating than what I usually watch. But it’s very well done.

I like how Hen waters the one tree that’s not dead.

Stars Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre. Directed by Garth Davis (Lion).
