Aliens: Newt’s Tale
{3.5/5} “‘Those people are here to protect you. They’re soldiers.’ ‘It won’t make any difference.'”
Aliens: Newt’s Tale #1 by Mike Richardson, published in 1992
When Newt’s father comes across a giant U-shaped thing on their planet he intends to stake a claim on it. But when he goes to investigate, he’s attacked by a face hugger. Each time Newt asks her mother if things are going to be OK she says yes, but now her mother is dead and so is everyone else. She’s been able to stay alive hiding in the ducts — until someone new arrives.
This is based on the movie.
When I picked this up I thought it was the complete story but it’s only book 1 of 2 (there’s no “#1” on the cover).
If you want to read a comic book version of the movie you could read this — but I suggest you just watch the movie. They obviously didn’t have the rights for the characters’ likenesses. So on every page you’re annoyed that Newt and Ripley and the others don’t look like themselves. The artists, Jim Somerville and Brian Garvey, weren’t able to come close to depicting the dark and viscous atmosphere.
Maybe it would feel more like the movie if you listened to James Horner’s soundtrack while you’re reading it.
The extra scenes with Newt’s family don’t add anything really interesting — which is why they were cut from the theatrical version.
