Star Trek: The Doomsday Bug!

{4/5} “To something as alien as the artifact, we may well seem no more than infants — and the Enterprise merely a toy!”

Star Trek: The Doomsday Bug! by Len Wein & Michael Fleisher, published in 6 issues from Feb. 1987 to Jul. 1987

Admiral Kirk tries to convince the Romulans than an infected Andorian has entered their territory. Spock is in sickbay, fighting against the disease. A bunch of people have died already, so the Romulan commander takes Kirk with him further into Romulan territory to try to stop the spread. Meanwhile, Starfleet Command learns that Kirk has gone into Romulan territory without orders and they send Captain Styles to bring him back.

The 1st 2 issues take place after Star Trek III and the ones after that take place after Star Trek IV.

In 3 of the issues there are some silly moments but overall the story is a good one. The other 3 issues weren’t quite as interesting.

When the crew comes aboard the Enterprise-A each of them has a reflection — this is a nice touch.

One thing I was disappointed in was when they were on a planet like the one in “Shore Leave” they were unaccountably confused and didn’t reference that earlier mission at all — which made this one a tad repetitive.

The artwork by people like Gray Morrow and Tom Sutton is a style where the characters mostly look like themselves.

The Star Trek comics were edited by Robert Greenberger, who later wrote a few novels himself.

This set of comics are the oldest Star Trek comics I have.
