Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again by Frank Miller, published in 2001
Carrie breaks the Atom, an old friend of Bruce’s, out of the lab where he’s been imprisoned. When the president has a press conference to talk about a meteor heading for Earth, he goes pixellated for a second even though there’s no transmission problem. Rogue reported James Olsen says the president isn’t real — he’s CGI. Batman’s team, led by Carrie aka Catgirl, attacks a power complex — they rescue the Flash.
Other characters who show up include Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Lex Luther, and Green Arrow.
Miller shows us once again that he was ahead of his time. Now there’s a worse president than last time, and there are worse things on TV.
Lines like “Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing… so long as nobody’s listening” and “Ever since the United States Congress passed the Freedom From Information Act…” are startling. Things that were far fetched now are not.
It’s about gathering your friends when it’s time to fight back. It also shows how someone can change their mind after many years.
The artwork by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley is splendid.
