Star Trek Annual #1: So Near the Touch
{5/5} “‘When hostages were take on Nimbus III, it was myself and my crew that was called in to be the rescue party… and as I recall that was a successful mission. Am I not right, gentlemen?’ ‘Actually, Captain, we were captured as well.’ ‘I had it under control, Mr. Spock.’ ‘Sybok took over the ship.'” — Kirk & Spock
Star Trek Annual #1: So Near the Touch by George Takei & Peter David, published in 1990
The Enterprise is heading to Datagud, where there’s an environmental and medical crisis. Sulu is surprised but pleased to find his old flame Corazon is going to join them on this mission. They previously met at Starbase 27 and they call each other Yin and Yang — on the way they try jogging and fencing. But when they arrive at Datagud they find there’s resistance to their help from an organized group.
It’s a great story, and of course in particular for fans of Sulu. Corazon is a terrific character — for one thing, she’s actually funny.
It’s about people who are selfless, and people who will do whatever it takes for love.
The artwork by Gray Morrow is terrific.
This is the 2nd time I’ve read it.
I’ve read 1 autobiography by Takei.
I’ve read 28 novels, 3 graphic novels, and a bunch of comic books by David. I previously reviewed The Best of Star Trek.
