Radiant

{4.5/5} “‘Towers need Radiants. They’re born rarely, and are never allowed to change their citizenship. But the human body isn’t designed to hold that much energy. So much life force… the magic kills them in the end.’ To Shai he added, ‘That’s what happened you, yes?'”

Radiant by Karina Sumner-Smith, published in 2014

Unlike everybody else, Xhea has no magic — but she can see ghosts. She ekes out a living by going into the subway ruins, where no one else can go, and finding artifacts to sell. When a man comes to her with a ghost tethered to him, she agrees to take it for a couple of days. But she finds that the girl, Shai, has a second tether — to her body. Someone is trying to put them back together.

Like Foundryside, the intriguing protagonist and unique setting will draw you into the story.

It’s about being there for people who need you.

This is the 1st novel I’ve read by Sumner-Smith, and it is her 1st novel. We published her very 1st short story in Challenging Destiny.
