The Kaiju Preservation Society
{4.5/5} “First, understand that when we say KPS is an animal rights organization, we are actively engaged with these animals — very large, very wild, very dangerous animals. We will train you on how to interact with them, and we maintain stringent safety protocols at all times. But you can get injured, severely, and if you’re not careful, you can actually die.”
The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi, published in 2022
Jamie works at a food delivery startup called füdmüd, until he’s laid off at the beginning of the pandemic. Because he needs to pay the rent, he starts working as a delivery person or, as the company calls it, a deliverator. When Uber Eats buys füdmüd he even loses that job. But one of his customers, an old acquaintance, offers him a job — it involves going into the field and dealing with large animals.
You don’t have to have any particular interest in kaiju to enjoy this novel.
It’s fun and funny.
It’s about looking after something important, top secret, and dangerous. It’s about losing your job and then later running into the person who fired you in unusual circumstances.
I’ve read 15 books by Scalzi. I previously reviewed The Last Emperox.
