The Employees

{4.5/5} “After the objects came on board, everyone’s mood has lifted noticeably, but to them it’s something special. To us, the objects are like an artificial postcard from Earth. To them, they’re a postcard from the future.”

The Employees: a workplace novel of the twenty-second century by Olga Ravn, published in 2020

Some objects from New Discovery were taken aboard Six Thousand Ship. People on the ship interact with them in various ways, and some of the objects might be living. Now those people are being interviewed. Some of them are human from Earth, and some are humanoids — some of them have bigger problems than others. Some of the humanoids get rebooted.

This short novel was translated from Danish.

The prose is challenging, a bit reminiscent of This Is How You Lose the Time War.

But eventually you realize what’s happening, and it’s a story worth paying attention to. It’s about decisions by workers, and decisions by employers.

This is the 1st book I’ve read by Ravn.
