Crazy Heart

{4.5/5} “Those are the ugliest… boots I’ve ever seen in my life. Did the salesman threaten to shoot your dog?”

Bad Blake is an aging country singer who now plays mostly in smaller venues. He hasn’t written any new songs lately, but he still has some fans from the old days. When Jean, a music writer, interviews him they form a unexpected connection. Bad has been leading an unhealthy lifestyle for a long time — could he change if he wanted to?

Crazy Heart was released in 2009.

The romantic pairing of Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal is a bit unexpected, but they make it work. They both give fabulous performances, as always.

Bad has done some not-so-great things in his life, but you will cheer for him. You don’t have to be a big fan of country music to enjoy this movie.

The music is country songs, of course.

Bridges (Arlington Road) plays Bad¬†— he did his own singing for the movie.¬†Gyllenhaal (Stranger Than Fiction) plays Jean. Colin Farrell (The Way Back) plays a younger country star who was helped by Bad. Robert Duvall (Get Low) plays the friendly neighbourhood bartender.

The movie was directed by Scott Cooper (also an actor, his directorial debut).
