Oblivion

{4.5/5} “Another day in paradise.”

Humans won the war against the Scavs but the Earth was laid waste in the process — the remnants of humanity are heading to Titan. Jack and Victoria are a team who will be on their way to Titan in just two weeks. For now, they must protect the giant machines that are collecting the remaining water on the planet. Drones guard these machines, and it’s Jack’s job to fix the drones when they break down — or are damaged by Scavs.

Oblivion, released in 2013

We are told right away that something is amiss, and the true nature of what’s going on is gradually revealed.

Post-apocalyptic Earth never looked better — I recommend you see this on the big screen if you can. Much of the movie was filmed in Iceland.

It’s Tom Cruise’s movie — he has the majority of screen time — and he sells his character as always.

There are certainly aspects that will remind you of other science fiction movies, but that’s fairly inevitable. The story goes in its own direction — I liked it a lot.

I have no doubt that the people I mentioned the other day are working on lists of what was wrong with the movie, but for me watching it for the first time I thought it was well worth watching.

I guessed that the electronic action movie music was by Hans Zimmer, but it’s M83 (their first soundtrack).

Tom Cruise (Minority Report) plays Jack and Morgan Freeman (10 Items or Less) plays Beech. Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go) plays Victoria and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) plays Julia.

The movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy).

Glad you liked it Dave! I had the same reaction – that there were lots of things to be picked apart, but it was fun despite all that.
