America’s Got Talent (season 8)

{4.5/5} “America is going to be so surprised at what they see” — Howie Mandel

America’s Got Talent season 8, aired in 2013

As with previous seasons I watched the audition shows.

Two new judges have joined Howie Mandel and Howard Stern. Mel B, best known for being one of the Spice Girls, has judged other talent shows as well. Heidi Klum, best known for being a supermodel, has judged, produced, and hosted a couple of reality shows.

Since there are now 4 judges, 3 of them have to give the contestant a “yes” to send them on to the next round in Las Vegas. Most of the time, in the auditions that make it on camera, all 4 judges vote the same way.

Here are some of the acts you’ll want to watch this season:

  • 3Penny Chorus and Orchestra, an orchestra/choir that plays/sings “Call Me Maybe”
  • Anna Christine, 10-year-old girl who sings like a young woman
  • Special Head, a man whose meditation allows him to levitate
  • Catapult, a dance company who produces startling shapes in shadow
  • Angela Hoover, a funny comedian who does spot-on impressions of celebrities
  • Chicago Boys, acrobats who use jump ropes in their act
  • Rong Niu, a performer who rides a unicycle while balancing bowls on her head
  • Collins Key, a magician who burns up a dollar bill and makes it reappear in a sealed bag of popcorn
  • Megan Piphus, a ventriloquist who sings with her puppet
  • SensEtion, a dance group that uses objects and video in a unique way

and more singers and dancers of all ages.

As always there are some people who aren’t as talented as they think they are.
