In a World…

{5/5} “I just want to give you my card. I’m not a vocal coach anymore, but I would make an exception for you because you sound like a squeaky toy. And I don’t mean that in a bad way.”

Carol works freelance as a voice coach and lives with her father, Sam, who does voiceovers. When Sam’s new girlfriend is about to move in he kicks Carol out. The king of voiceovers, who has died, used to often start a trailer with the words “In a world…” That phrase is coming back, and Sam wants his protégé to be the one to speak it. But Carol thinks it’s time for a woman’s voice to be heard.

In a World… was released in 2013.

I’m not sure how much of a splash this movie made when it came out but it deserved to make a big one. It’s unique and very funny.

The characters are not your average movie characters and will surprise you several times.

Lake Bell (the TV show Boston Legal) plays Carol and Demetri Martin (Contagion) plays her frequent co-worker Louis. Fred Melamed (A Serious Man) plays Sam and Alexandra Holden (Sugar & Spice) plays his much younger girlfriend.

Michaela Watkins (Enough Said) plays Carol’s sister and Rob Corddry (Warm Bodies) plays her brother-in-law. Nick Offerman (Kings of Summer) and Geena Davis (Quick Change) also have parts. Look for Cameron Diaz (Being John Malkovich) in the movie within the movie.

The movie was directed by Lake Bell (her first as director).
