Star Trek
{5/5} “Your father was captain of a starship for 12 minutes. He saved 800 lives including your mother’s and yours. I dare you to do better.”
Star Trek, released in 2009
Kirk and McCoy are still at the academy when they go onboard the Enterprise under Captain Pike and Lieutenant Spock. They are responding to a distress call from Vulcan. A Romulan from the future, Nero, has come back for revenge — on Vulcan, and most of all on Spock.
Highlights include
- Kirk’s father George taking over as captain and fighting Nero while his crew escapes in shuttles
- The first sight of the USS Enterprise when Kirk and McCoy are heading to it in a shuttle
- Kirk and Sulu doing a space jump and then fighting Romulans aboard the mining platform
- Spock from the original universe, particularly his first meeting with Kirk
- Everything Montgomery Scott says — he’s very funny
- Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Scott working together
This movie answered the question: What would Star Trek be like as an action movie? It’s action packed — you won’t be able to tear your eyes from the screen.
It’s visually stunning, it’s hilarious, the actors are perfect, and it will give you hope for the future.
Stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Bruce Greenwood, and Leonard Nimoy. Directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The music by Michael Giacchino is breathtaking (my favourite track is “Enterprising Young Men”).
This is the 4th time I’ve seen it. My previous review is here.

I watched this again — it remains as impressive as the first time I watched it.
