Mildred’s daughter was raped and killed a year ago, and the police haven’t arrested anyone. In utter frustration, she rents 3 billboards that highlight the fact that the police, and specifically Chief Willoughby, haven’t arrested anyone. She even gets on the news — of course, many people in town think she’s gone too far.
The focus is on three characters in pain — one who lost her daughter, one who has cancer, and one who lost his father. It’s pretty serious, although it has some funny moments.
It’s about people who are so sad and angry that they’re ready to take extreme measures. It’s also about forgiveness and redemption.
Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell are all astonishing.
Directed by Martin McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths). The gentle music is by Carter Burwell.
