Annihilation

{4/5} “Something here is making giant waves in the gene pool.”

Annihilation, released in 2018

Lena is a professor of medicine. She thought her husband, who was in the military, was dead but he returns after a year. He behaves oddly and she eventually finds out he’s the only one who survived entering a mysterious area known as “the shimmer.” She joins a team to find out for herself what’s inside.

Unlike, say, Tomb Raider (which I watched a bit of yesterday), you don’t know what’s going to happen in this movie.

The visuals are interesting and the characters are terrific. There are some gruesome moments.

It’s the strangest movie I’ve seen in some time. It mostly held my interest, though.

Stars Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina). The eerie music is by Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury.
