Counterpart (season 1)

{4.5/5} “And in the end, that, that capacity for love, the ability to love someone unselfishly is the only thing that will separate me from you.”

Counterpart season 1, aired in 2017-18

Howard discovers that his world is not the only one. He works for a spy organization in Berlin but doesn’t have any context for what he does. It turns out the very building that he works in houses a secret — a connection to a parallel world. Thirty years ago the two worlds were the same, but things have diverged since then. Howard meets his counterpart from the other world — who looks exactly like him but acts completely different.

Things were outrageously mysterious at the beginning but I trusted that enough would eventually become clear. Some things certainly did, but I was still left feeling a tiny bit confused.

There’s lots to like — including scenes of Howard talking to Howard.

It’s about a long game of spy vs. spy. It’s about people who hate other people because of something they think they did.

J.K. Simmons is mesmerizing as the two Howards.

Stars Olivia Williams, Sara Serraiocco, and Nazanin Boniadi.

Created by Justin Marks (the TV movie Rewind).
