The Forgotten Garden
{5/5} “It’s going to be ours, Rose, yours and mine. A secret place where we can be together, just the two of us, just as we imagined when we were younger. Four walls, locked gates, our very own paradise. Even when you’re unwell you can come here, Rose. The walls keep it protected from the rough sea winds, so you’ll be able to listen to the birds, smell the flowers, feel the sun on your face.”
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton, published in 2008
When Cassandra’s grandmother dies, her grandmother’s sisters tell her something surprising. Grandmother wasn’t a biological member of the family– she was found at the dock when she was around 4 years old, abandoned after a voyage from England to Australia. They further revealed that Grandmother had been found with a small suitcase — Cassandra realizes that she knows that suitcase intimately, as she had gone to live with her Grandmother as a child. When the will is read she finds out that she now owns a house she never knew about — a house in England.
It’s about family and mysteries, stories and finding out where you came from. It’s about people who are overly concerned with propriety, and people who would do anything for a loved one.
There are many revelations, but they all make sense.
I’ve read 5 books by Morton. I previously reviewed The Secret Keeper.
