Luca
{4.5/5} “Walking is just like swimming, but without fins or a tail. And also there’s no water.”
Luca, released in 2021
Luca is a sea monster — his mom always tells him to stay away from the surface. But one day he follows a guy named Alberto out of the water and finds that when he goes onto land he transforms into human form. Alberto has a bunch of human stuff, and he and Luca have lots of fun. His mom finds out and decides to send him to the bottom of the ocean with his see-through uncle, but Luca runs away — he and Alberto go to the human town.
With a cast of delightful characters, this animated movie from Pixar is a pleasure to watch from beginning to end.
It’s about friendship, and seeing that people who are different might not be monsters.
There’s an epilogue to the story in the form of still images during the credits.
Stars the voices of Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, and Sacha Baron Cohen. Directed by Enrico Casarosa (story artist on Coco). The Italian flavoured music is by Dan Romer.
