Russian Doll (season 2)

{4.5/5} “It used to be a school for Jews, now it’s open plan living. I use the terms ‘now’ and ‘used to be’ loosely.”

Russian Doll season 2, aired in 2022

Nadia steps into a subway and suddenly it’s 1982. She goes with a guy named Chez she meets in a bar to his place, and when she looks in a mirror she sees her mother. And her mother is pregnant. She gets back on the subway and makes it back to 2022. Her godmother Ruth tells her who Chez is, and Nadia decides to returns to 1982 to fix the worst thing that her mother did.

It doesn’t have the same oomph as season 1, but that’s basically impossible.

The scenes in 1944 are striking. The theme of family is nicely dealt with. The conversation Nadia has with her mother is a great conversation — it’s just illogical that it happens.

The season is a bit less coherent than season 1. Alan’s storyline isn’t quite as strong as Nadia’s.

Rosie O’Donnell is the voice of the subway announcer. Sharlto Copley guest stars as Chez.

Stars Chloƫ Sevigny, Brendan Sexton III, and Greta Lee.

I previously reviewed season 1.
