Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (season 1)
{5/5} “Maybe that’s why I’m here, to remind you of the power of… possibility.”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1, aired in 2022
Captain Pike is recovering at his home in Montana while the Enterprise is in space dock. Admiral April recalls him early because Una, otherwise known as Number One, has gone missing on a first contact mission. He retrieves Spock from Vulcan and they’re on their way. Also on board are Cadet Uhura and Nurse Chapel. Pike continues to recall his vision of the future where he saw his own death. When he finds Una, he learns that their own actions had unforeseen consequences.
It’s beautiful, thrilling, and hilarious.
Jeff Russo’s theme music is delightful but leans a bit too heavily on the TOS theme. I don’t mind if it references it but it’s a different show and should have its own theme.
This version of Pike, Number One, and Spock first appeared in Discovery season 2.
In the 2nd episode there’s a dinner in the captain’s cabin, which Uhura attends for the first time — it’s a simple scene, but yet astonishingly effective. Every moment between Spock and T’Pring is priceless.
One aspect of the 9th episode went a bit overboard — it was a bit too much like Alien.
The way they tied in the season finale with the TOS episode “Balance of Terror” was clever. On the other hand, the writers have succumbed to “Kirk drift” — they obviously haven’t read this article.
You will definitely wish there were more than 10 episodes.
Stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Bruce Horak.
Created by Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Picard), Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Picard), and Jenny Lumet (writer of the movie Rachel Getting Married).
