Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World
{5/5} “I don’t want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to the science.”
Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World, aired in 2021
This 3-part documentary depicts the year that Greta Thunberg, a young climate activist, travelled to learn more about the changing climate from experts and to speak to masses of people. She travelled with her father, who supports her activities wholeheartedly. She addressed the United Nations in New York, the World Economic Forum in Davos, and crowds of people everywhere.
She first started her strike for climate, skipping school once a week, in 2018 — she would sit with a sign outside the Swedish parliament.
She meets scientists who show her things they didn’t expect, things that happened because ecosystems are complex — a small change can have unexpected consequences. She looks at shrinking glaciers, deadly wildfires, flash flooding, and reindeer who can’t find enough food. She even meets with coal miners who have lost their jobs.
Thunberg has a very nice conversation with David Attenborough. He gives the positive example of countries coming together to save whales, which came back from the brink after people stopped hunting them.
She understands more about climate science than pretty much anyone aside from scientists. We see how she is affected by her autism, and the pandemic.
Thunberg is a hero. She is brave, smart, and precise.
A few more quotations…
“World leaders are behaving like children, so it falls on us to be the adults in the room.”
“If you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you. How dare you.” — speaking to the UN
“I want to be just a normal teenager, but this is not a normal situation. And I think we must step out of our comfort zone.”
“I’m such a public figure, and everything I do gets completely twisted.”
The low IMDb rating is, of course, because of conservatives who may or may not have actually watched the show.
