Space Sweepers

{4.5/5} “Earth used to be the symbol of life. Space, death. Now through the miracle of technology, we can go fishing in a stream above the sky.”

Space Sweepers, released in 2021

A group of people who look for garbage to trade in for cash stumble across what looks like a little girl. But it’s a robot — a robot that has a bomb inside. Because they’re desperate for money, they contact the terrorists and demand $2 million to give her back to them. The terrorists agree. On the way, some of the crew grow a bit attached to the girl and don’t really want to give her up.

Astonishingly, this is South Korea’s very first science fiction movie set in space.

The special effects are terrific — particularly the shots of the different space stations, habitats, and ships in orbit.

I wasn’t sure about the story at the beginning, but it picks up once they find the girl.

It’s about what you would do for money, or a better place in society. And what you would do for friendship.

Stars Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, and Richard Armitage. Directed by Sung-hee Jo (A Werewolf Boy). The music is by Kim Tae-seong.
