The Water Man

{4/5} “You didn’t happen to bring a can opener or anything, did you?”

The Water Man, released in 2020

Gunner’s mom has leukemia. He learns about the local myth of the Water Man, who might actually be real. A man tells him the story of how the Water Man drowned but came back to life, and how he can bring animals back to life. Gunner makes a deal with Jo, who’s seen the Water Man, to go into the forest to find him — he thinks he can help his mom.

It’s about friendship, and difficult feelings about your family.

The ending didn’t quite make sense*, but other than that I liked it a lot.

Stars Amiah Miller, Lonnie Chavis, Rosario Dawson, and Alfred Molina. Directed by David Oyelowo (his first movie as director). The music is by Peter Baert.

Spoiler alert

*Gunner and Jo experienced fantastic things in the forest and then the Water Man turned out not to be real.
