Three Thousand Years of Longing

{3.5/5} “I wish I could forget I ever met you.”

Three Thousand Years of Longing, released in 2022

Alithea is a narratologist, trying to make sense of the world’s stories. While in Istanbul to give a talk, she buys a glass bottle in a shop. Back in her hotel room, while cleaning it the top pops off and a djinn appears. He asks her to make a wish. Alithea really doesn’t want to make a wish, so the djinn tells her about the previous wishes people made.

Despite the oldness of the premise, I thought with these people involved there was a good chance it would be worth watching.

Although I was somewhat interested in where the story would go, it also didn’t grab me as much as I wanted it to.

Stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Directed by George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road). The sparse but beautiful music is by Tom Holkenborg.
