Devs
{5/5} “I sorta mentally prepped myself for a high-speed police chase and 20 years in jail, but… OK, let’s try it your way.”
Devs, aired in 2020
Sergei is excited to move up to the top-secret Devs department at his company, Amaya. But when he finds out what they’re doing, he decides he has to secretly record the code using his watch. Forest, the head of the company, discovers what he’s done. When Sergei doesn’t come home his girlfriend Lily, who also works at Amaya, vows to find out what happened to him.
This is an 8-part miniseries. It goes in surprising directions.
The bad guys, at least some of them, actually regret their actions — which is more interesting than most bad guys.
The character of Jamie, Lily’s ex-boyfriend, is a great one — annoyed about the breakup but willing to help her with a crazy situation.
There are some brilliant conversations, 1 or 2 of which might be unlike any you’ve seen before.
There is some visual and auditory strangeness, but what the characters are doing could certainly be considered strange.
It’s pretty serious at times. As for the last episode, there’s a lot to like but I don’t think everything makes perfect sense.
The eerie music is by Geoff Barrow, Ben Salisbury, and The Insects.
Stars Nick Offerman, Alison Pill, and Sonoya Mizuno.
Created by Alex Garland (Annihilation).
