Twelve Monkeys
{5/5} “‘I’m not crazy.’ ‘Of course not, of course not. You want to escape, right? That’s very sane, that’s very sane.'”
Twelve Monkeys, released in 1995
Cole is a prisoner underground. He does a good job collecting samples from the surface when he is volunteered. The people in charge then trust him with a more complex task — go back in time to gather more information about the virus that killed millions. In 1990 Kathryn is a psychiatrist who comes across Cole in jail and tries to help him.
As a fan of time travel and a fan of Terry Gilliam, this movie is right up my alley.
The future has a terrific look to it — very mechanical, with lots of wires.
The parts with Jeffrey in the mental institution are very funny. The part where James believes he’s mentally ill and Kathryn believes he’s from the future is brilliant.
It’s a masterpiece.
Christopher Plummer, Frank Gorshin, and David Morse have small parts.
Stars Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt. Directed by Terry Gilliam (The Man Who Killed Don Quixote). The mysterious music is by Paul Buckmaster.
This is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve seen it.
