Star Trek: Gateways — Doors Into Chaos
{4.5/5} “Everything pointed to the Iconians playing at a larger game, not just selling the technology… They devised wondrous technology, and left on several worlds an influence that survived over two hundred millennia. Why come back now, and why offer to sell their greatest achievement? And if these weren’t the Iconians, how did they get their hands on the technology and why were they selling it?”
Star Trek: The Next Generation — Gateways: Doors Into Chaos by Robert Greenberger, published in 2001
People claiming to be the Iconians have turned on all the gateways in the galaxy, and people are using them to travel long distances instantly. Some of those people have nefarious intentions. Captain Picard is put in charge of a mission to visit the Iconians, who have said that they will auction the gateways off to the highest bidder.
We see things from a variety of perspectives and visit characters like Scotty, Garak, Martok, and Rom.
It’s about building a coalition with neighbours who have at times been your enemy.
This is the 2nd book I’ve read by Greenberger. I previously read Doomsday World, the one he wrote with Carmen Carter, Peter David, and Michael Jan Friedman. Greenberger was also the editor of the Star Trek comics for a while.
The previous book in the series is Star Trek: Gateways — Chainmail.
