Batman

{4.5/5} “Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in where a man dressed up like a bat gets all of my press?”

Batman, released in 1989

Commissioner Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent have vowed to rid Gotham City of organized crime, and the man at the top is Carl Grissom. When they link Axis Chemicals to Grissom, Grissom’s right-hand man, Jack Napier, goes to clear out the place — but the police and Batmna show up. Jack falls into a vat, and emerges as the Joker. Meanwhile, Alexander Knox and Vicki Vale are trying to figure out who Batman is.

Gotham City and the Batmobile never looked better — with such a glorious style that others wanted to emulate as much as they could.

The moment when Batman crashes through the ceiling to rescue Vicki Value from the Joker is a great one.

One interesting behind-the-scenes fact is that Nicholson got a percentage of the profits, and the movie made lots of money. So he made $60 million, more than he made on any other project.

Michael Keaton is charming and troubled as Bruce Wayne and mysterious and threatening as Batman. Jack Nicholson is funny and menacing as Jack Napier/the Joker.

Stars Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Billly Dee Williams, Jack Palance, and Pat Hingle. Directed by Tim Burton (Wednesday). Danny Elman’s soundtrack is one of my favourites — it’s thrilling from start to finish.

This is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve seen it.
