The Starless Sea
{4/5} “He can hear only his footsteps, his breath, his heartbeat, and the crackling flame of the torch that is definitely getting dimmer, which is disappointing because he had hoped it would be a magic endless-light torch and not a regular extinguishable one.”
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, published in 2019
Zachary is a grad student studying video games. One day in the library he stumbles across a book titled Sweet Sorrows. It’s an old book with no author listed. But in that book is the true story of an event from his childhood, an event he told no one about. He once found a mysterious door painted on a brick wall, a door that looked like it would take you to another world.
This is a story for people who like stories.
Much of it is great, and it is well written. I certainly like the premise. Fans of The Night Circus might want to give it a try.
Some things were a bit too mysterious or random — it didn’t quite cohere enough for me.
This is the 2nd book I’ve read by Morgenstern. I previously reviewed The Night Circus.
