Barbie
{5/5} “I know I’m Stereotypical Barbie and therefore don’t form conjectures concerning the causality of adjacent unfolding events, but some things have been happening that might be related.”
Barbie, released in 2023
Barbie has a great day every day. In her neighbourhood, Barbieland, there are a lot of people named Barbie, a lot of people named Ken, and one person named Alan. But then she starts thinking about death, she falls, and when she steps out of her shoes her heels are on the ground. Weird Barbie tells her that she has to go to the Real World and find the girl who’s playing with her.
This movie is both hilarious and thought provoking.
It has a perfect colourful look to it that will remind you of Barbie even if you’ve never played with one.
Margot Robbie’s comedic timing is brilliant. America Ferrera’s monologue about how difficult it is to be a woman is astonishing. Rhea Perlman has a nice role as the inventor of Barbie.
Stars Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, and Will Farrell. Directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women). The music is by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, and the soundtrack contains a bunch of fun songs.
