The Island
{4.4/5} “The whole reason you exist is because everyone wants to live forever. It’s the new American dream.”
The Island, released in 2005
Most of the Earth’s population has been wiped out by disease, and the people who are left live in a very structured society. They eat what they’re told, work on what they’re told, and don’t fraternize too much. They all want to win the lottery — the winners get to go to the Island, the last natural area. When Lincoln Six Echo’s friend Jordan Two Delta wins, he’s suddenly worried that she’s going to be killed.
It’s about knowing the ins and outs of your society, even if it is dystopian. It’s about a world holding a big secret.
The opening section gives you an interesting introduction to the world. In the chase section there’s some pretty intense action. It has a great look to it.
It’s about how one person, or two, can make a difference. It’s about who is human and who is not.
Michael Clarke Duncan and Ethan Phillips have small but fun parts.
Stars Scarlett Johansson, Ewan McGregor, Steve Buscemi, and Sean Bean. Directed by Michael Bay (The Rock). The music is by Steve Jablonsky.
This is the 2nd time I’ve seen it.
