The Gate to Futures Past

{4.5/5} “Now we know they didn’t die off. Instead, the Hoveny hid themselves so well other spacefaring species had no idea they still existed or where. And a thousand years later, a new generation sent ships like this to Cersi — and who knows where else — in what I assure you was a very costly attempt to wake technology ancient even to them.”

The Gate to Futures Past by Julie E. Czerneda, published in 2016

The Sona is moving through subspace, but Sira and Morgan don’t know where it’s taking them. On board are all that remain of the M’hiray and Om’ray, the Clan, descendants of the Hoveny. People are getting sick, and the ship only takes orders from Sira — who’s inexperienced at giving orders — so Morgan is worried about getting to their destination.

This is the sequel to This Gulf of Time and Stars.

It’s about communicating with a difficult AI, being visited by the dead, and dealing with an unknown place.

As she has before, Czerneda brings the story to a startling conclusion.

I’ve read 18 books by Czerneda.
