In 1686 Petronella is poor but beautiful and Johannes agrees to marry her. She travels to Amsterdam to his house, and she hopes to one day love him. Johannes buys Petronella a model of their house as a wedding gift, and she with nothing better to do asks a miniaturist to make things to put in it.
