The Miniaturist

{5/5} “‘What am I to do with it exactly?’ ‘You’ll think of something.'”

The Miniaturist, aired in 2017

In 1686 Petronella is poor but beautiful and Johannes agrees to marry her. She travels to Amsterdam to his house, and she hopes to one day love him. It seems he’s away on business a lot and when he’s home he argues with his sister, Marin. Johannes buys Petronella a model of their house as a wedding gift, and she with nothing better to do asks a miniaturist to make things to put in it.

This is a mini-series.

It’s about marrying into a family with a lot of secrets, and receiving gifts from a mysterious person who knows too much.

Every scene is gripping.

It’s not based on a true story, but the author of the novel was inspired by the real Petronella Oortman’s miniature house on display at a museum.

Stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Romola Garai, Alex Hassell, and Hayley Squires. Directed by Guillem Morales (Julia’s Eyes).
