Star Trek: Discovery (season 5)
{4.5/5} “I got a second chance once. This is yours.”
Star Trek: Discovery season 5, aired in 2024
Captain Burnham and the Discovery have been tasked with retrieving a top-secret item from an 800-year-old Romulan ship that has just been discovered. But scavengers get there first and get away with the item. Burnham breaks up with Book. Saru decides to accept a posting as Federation Ambassador, and Saru and T’Rina decide to get married. Stamets is disappointed Starfleet isn’t going to continue with the spore drive program.
This is the last season.
I was a bit frustrated with the ongoing story. The quest structure is clunky, and it’s just not as interesting as other stories. There were great aspects in every episode, though.
The 1st episode is stunning, both visually and also in the way they bring back something from TNG.* In “Face the Strange” Burnham and Rayner find themselves jumping through time — and Burnham runs into herself.
As for the finale, the decision that’s made within the episode makes sense. However, it kind of calls into question the choice the writers made about the ongoing story. There’s an epilogue that takes place some years later, which is lovely.
Ultimately if you look at the plot there’s a lot of running around, and even a few surprising mistakes. But if you look at how the characters relate to each other and seek purpose, you can find value in the story.
Stars Callum Keith Rennie, Patrick Kwok-Choon, Eve Harlow, and Elias Toufexis.
I previously reviewed season 4.
